No Fuss Make Up for Tired Moms

Originally posted on BabyCenter by ME!

Since becoming a mom, my new normal is tired. My two year old still gets up a few times a night and my seven year old wakes up at the crack of dawn. On most mornings, my hair is a mess and my eye circles are out of control. But, you wouldn't know it because I've become the Houdini of my own beauty routine.

Here are a few products I'm always sure to have in my arsenal, and nothing on the list is more than 10 dollars!

I used to wash and dry my hair everyday. I just don't have time to do that anymore.  And while I was very anti dry shampoo for a long time, I actually found one that I like. Not Your Mama's Dry Shampoo feels tingly and fresh. It goes on light and combs through with little effort. My hair is left with tons of body and nice clean scent. In fact, I like this brand for more than just their dry shampoos. The beach spray is great too.

I wear contacts so I have to be careful about my eye make up. Almay eyeliner seems to be the only kind that is gentle enough for my sensitive eyes, but stays put all day.  While it's water resistant and smudge proof, but it comes off easily with soap and water.

A quick swipe of shimmery brown shadow really makes my eyes pop and look awake (emphasis on the awake part). I apply it with a make up brush, which seems to work better than a regular eye shadow applicator, because you can really control how much color you put on your eyes. If I'm feeling really fancy, I'll blend two colors together.

I love this CeraVe moisturizer combo. In fact, I've used it for years because it was recommended by my dermatologist. I leave my face a little damp before I put it on so that it soaks in better. The AM version has a built SPF 30 sunblock and the PM version helps repair and restore when you sleep.

These are great for an afternoon pick me up, or a quick swipe at night to get your eye make up off. The scent is pure magic – citrusy and sweet pink grapefruit. Sometimes I open the package just to a whiff. No joke. At 30 wipes per pack, it's a great bargain.

Mamís, what are your go to make up products? Tell us in the comments below.

Celebrating Whole Foods Beauty Week: Product Swamp Challenge

All Whole Foods Market locations will offer a limited edition “Hello, Beauty!” bag for
$18 (valued at $60), now until March 24.

It's Beauty Week at Whole Foods Markets, and they challenged me to swap out some of my favorite make up items for natural, chemical free, organic versions. Being a self proclaimed make up junkie, I couldn't pass up the offer, and was very curious to see if these all natural make ups could stand up to my favorite brands.

Here's what I swapped:

Every One Face Wash
The Good: EVERYONE FACE is cruelty free, gluten free, paraben free, polysorbate free, disodium EDTA free, sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate free, and non-GMO verification pending.

Results: Not only did I love the way that this product cleansed my face, but I loved the way it smelled - totally fresh and lemony.  It was strong enough to take off my make up at the end of the day, but didn't dry out my skin. Essential oils moisturize and real fruit enzymes exfoliate.

Gabriel Mascara (black)
The Good: All Gabriel products are gluten free, vegan friendly, and free from all of those harmful chemicals that you don't want anywhere near your face. The mascaras have vitamin B-5 to lengthen and thicken lashes. That's a big plus.

Results: I was skeptical about using an all natural mascara because I have used the same brand for so long. I like having lashes that look full and long. Gabriel mascara provided this and also allowed for me to build the make up. One coat was great for the day, and two coats was perfect for evening.

Gabriel Matte Lipstick in Nude
The Good: Gabriel lipsticks come in 25 different shades, but this is the one that I gravitated towards -- a soft nude shade that could be worn alone or with lip gloss for added shine.  Their lip products are held to the same standards as the rest of their make up (gluten free, non GMO, vegan, etc.)

Results: The lipstick held up all day, which was a big plus for this busy mom.

Beauty Week is happening now through March 24, 2015. Not sure what to get? Whole Foods Market has beauty specialists on hand to help you find products that are right for your skin. I mean, where else can you and pick up almond milk, bread, and make up all in one place? It's a win, win!

Disclaimer: I was given a Whole Foods gift card to purchase the make up, but the ideas and opinions about each are my own.

Books for the Holidays - Last Minute Gift Ideas

We still have four more solid shopping days until Christmas, and many stores are remaining open round the clock to keep up with the demand. And while many kids, and parents a like, are looking for the latest tech gadgets for Christmas, I have my eyes set on something more old skool - books.

Why? I feel like there's nothing better than holding an actual, physical book. Forget about e-readers. Books are where it's at for me. And there are so many options -- one especially suited for everyone on your gift list. Here's a few choice books I picked up this year for family and friends.

Star Wars Oragami - for my hard to shop for brother in law.

Cake Mix Doctor Bakes Gluten Free - from my mother in law who love baking, and hates gluten.

Oh My Dinosaur, Snuggly Puppy, Personal Penguin - for the cute new baby in the family.

The Truck Food Cookbook - for my food truck obsessed best friend.

Expert Suduko - for my Suduko obsessed husband.

All of the above books are from Workman Publishing. Find these an many more at www.workman.com.

Moms, what other last minute gift ideas do you have?

Making You Mani Merry and Bright with China Glaze

I love the holidays. Everything is just a bit brighter and a tad more sparkly. From clothing to make up to handbags - a little glimmer is a sure sign that Christmas is on it's way.

So, when I found out about China Glaze's new Winter Joy collection, I knew I had found perfect polishes to match the feeling of the season.

There are twelve new colors in all, and many can be layered for different effects. My favorite combination is Merry Berry with a top coat of Ruby Red Shimmer. It's a daring look that's perfect to flash at a holiday party. If you're looking for something a bit more subdued, try a few coats of Bubbly Rose Gold Glitter. Right now, I have it on my toes and they've never been more sparkly. But the color is subtle enough to wear all year round.

Each bottle retails for about $7 at your local beauty supply store.

Check out the new colors:

·       Glistening Snow – Fine diamond-like silver glitter
·       Champagne Kisses – Bubbly rose gold glitter
·       Angel Wings – Delicate gold dust glitter
·       Winter Holly – Gold-flecked dazzling green glitter
·       Glitter All The Way – Exciting multi-color glitter
·       Pizzazz – Twinkling multi-dimensional glitter blend
·       Blue Bells Ring – Icy blue shimmer
·       Pure Joy – Fiery red glitter with gold particles
·       Red Satin – Silky blue-based red crème
·       With Love – Classic red crème with a hint of orange undertones
·       Merry Berry – Rich berry red crème
·       Cranberry Splash – Ruby red shimmer
I was also lucky enough to sample colors from upcoming their Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away collection. You can find these in a store near you the first week of December. And, let me tell you that they really capture the mystique of the Cirque de Soleil shows. My favorite of the bunch is Creative Fantasy topped with a coat of Get Carried Away.

Moms, what are your favorite looks from the new lines?
