Books for the Holidays - Last Minute Gift Ideas

We still have four more solid shopping days until Christmas, and many stores are remaining open round the clock to keep up with the demand. And while many kids, and parents a like, are looking for the latest tech gadgets for Christmas, I have my eyes set on something more old skool - books.

Why? I feel like there's nothing better than holding an actual, physical book. Forget about e-readers. Books are where it's at for me. And there are so many options -- one especially suited for everyone on your gift list. Here's a few choice books I picked up this year for family and friends.

Star Wars Oragami - for my hard to shop for brother in law.

Cake Mix Doctor Bakes Gluten Free - from my mother in law who love baking, and hates gluten.

Oh My Dinosaur, Snuggly Puppy, Personal Penguin - for the cute new baby in the family.

The Truck Food Cookbook - for my food truck obsessed best friend.

Expert Suduko - for my Suduko obsessed husband.

All of the above books are from Workman Publishing. Find these an many more at www.workman.com.

Moms, what other last minute gift ideas do you have?

Making You Mani Merry and Bright with China Glaze

I love the holidays. Everything is just a bit brighter and a tad more sparkly. From clothing to make up to handbags - a little glimmer is a sure sign that Christmas is on it's way.

So, when I found out about China Glaze's new Winter Joy collection, I knew I had found perfect polishes to match the feeling of the season.

There are twelve new colors in all, and many can be layered for different effects. My favorite combination is Merry Berry with a top coat of Ruby Red Shimmer. It's a daring look that's perfect to flash at a holiday party. If you're looking for something a bit more subdued, try a few coats of Bubbly Rose Gold Glitter. Right now, I have it on my toes and they've never been more sparkly. But the color is subtle enough to wear all year round.

Each bottle retails for about $7 at your local beauty supply store.

Check out the new colors:

·       Glistening Snow – Fine diamond-like silver glitter
·       Champagne Kisses – Bubbly rose gold glitter
·       Angel Wings – Delicate gold dust glitter
·       Winter Holly – Gold-flecked dazzling green glitter
·       Glitter All The Way – Exciting multi-color glitter
·       Pizzazz – Twinkling multi-dimensional glitter blend
·       Blue Bells Ring – Icy blue shimmer
·       Pure Joy – Fiery red glitter with gold particles
·       Red Satin – Silky blue-based red crème
·       With Love – Classic red crème with a hint of orange undertones
·       Merry Berry – Rich berry red crème
·       Cranberry Splash – Ruby red shimmer

I was also lucky enough to sample colors from upcoming their Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away collection. You can find these in a store near you the first week of December. And, let me tell you that they really capture the mystique of the Cirque de Soleil shows. My favorite of the bunch is Creative Fantasy topped with a coat of Get Carried Away.

Jake and the Neverland Pirates Coming to a Mall Near You!

Adventures in Potty Training with Pull-Ups

Pull-Ups has a few new potty training tricks on their revamped site that are definitely worth a share. Amongst the preschool crowd, there are still kids that are having a bit of trouble remembering to go, or having a totally dry night. These tools are a big help.

Log on to Pull-ups.com and check these features out:

Potty Break Timer: Download the Potty Break Timer for your Mac or PC and track when your child is due for his next trip to the potty. You can also run the program on their site, so no downloading required unless you want to. Choose from Minnie Mouse or Lightning McQueen themed clocks. This was my son's biggest problem. He was totally potty trained, but he sometimes got lost in play and forgot to go. This lead to many accidents.

Pull-Ups Character Calls: Ah, the advantages of growing up in the digital age  and getting a call from your favorite Disney character to remind you to use the potty and congratulate you on your potty training journey. I can't imagine anything more exciting for a toddler.  Choose from Mater or  Cinderella. My son, like many other boys, is a big Mater fan.

Moms, what are your favorite potty training tips?

101 Days of Summer with Banana Boat

The Fiedlers at an outdoor jazz concert in the park!

Summertime is my favorite time. The weather is warm, and almost always perfect. Like most families, we spend the majority of our summer outdoors – cooking, swimming, playing, and relaxing.

So when I heard about the Banana Boat 101 Days of Summer Play campaign, which asks parents to pledge to enjoy outdoor summer fun with their families every day all summer long, I thought – no problem!

Go online to take the pledge yourself.  It's easy and well worth it because every pledge that Banana Boat receives buys a bottle of sunscreen for The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp – a non-profit organization that provides camp experiences for children coping with cancer and other serious illnesses.

Our family has already worked on sending our favorite outdoor action pics to Banana Boat's Facebook photo contest. We're now eligible for some great prizes, including the grand prize of an all expense paid adventure vacation to the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

And if you are looking for an all-natural sunblock this summer (and who isn't with all those scary ingredients in other products), try Banana Boat® Natural Reflect sunscreen. It's the first mass brand sunscreen that offers sun protection using naturally sourced sunscreen actives that deflect UVA and UVB rays. What’s great is the sunscreen is oxybenzone, PABA and paraben free and uses 100% naturally-sourced mineral sunscreen. It’s a great option for children and babies – the baby and kids formulas are pediatrician tested and gentle on sensitive skin.

This product is available in three varieties – all of which are water resistant:
    • Natural Reflect Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+
    • Kids Natural Reflect Tear-Free Sting-Free Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+
    • Baby Natural Reflect Tear-Free Sting-Free Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+

Moms, what are your favorite outdoor summer activities?

Monsters University Trailer is HERE!

I'm so excited for this movie I could burst! My son and I are big fans of Monsters Inc. We just so happen to be watching it right now, as I write this post. Talk about a coincidence.

Here's a trailer for Disney's new movie Monsters University - because before they scared, they went to college! I love Mike's retainers! Hey, everyone had their awkward years - even one eyed green monsters.

Coming to a theater near you, and of course in 3D, summer of 2013!

A Refreshing Mother's Day Campaign from Diet Pepsi

This Mother’s Day weekend, Diet Pepsi will be surprising and refreshing their biggest fans – moms! While you’re out and about, make sure mom has a Diet Pepsi in hand because this Mother’s Day weekend, street teams will be stationed in 15 cities nationwide, scouting out moms and rewarding them with refreshing treats – like spafinder.com gift cards and custom totes filled with goodies, coupons and more.

This is an interesting concept and I'm totally willing to give it a try. If you're interested, keep an eye on the Diet Pepsi Facebook and Twitter pages throughout the weekend for updates and visit http://on.fb.me/IRXRBk to see if they’ll be hitting a city near you!

Yo Gabba Gabba Bedding and DVD Giveaway!

Bedtime is quite the event in our house. It's almost always a fight, but once our three year old is comfy in his pajamas and under his sheets with a book, we're good to go.

That's why I'm loving the new Yo Gabba Gabba bedding from Walmart. It's making our bedtime routine that much more easy (and fun), because he can't wait to cuddle up with Foofa, Muno, Tootee, and Brobee. The sheets are totally soft and super colorful. They are also super washable, but only I care about that part.

We were also able to pick up the new Yo Gabba Gabba Super Spies DVD. The title episode features Jason Bateman as a super spy who steals all the balloon art from Gabbaland. Adventures with the Yo Gabba Gabba gang ensue. Three other episodes including Big, Mystery and Space are also featured.

Want your own copy of the DVD and a Yo Gabba Gabba toddler blanket for yourself? All you have to do is tell us about you child's bedtime ritual in the comments section below.  The contest closes at 11: 59 PM, May 10, 2012.

A Portrait of a Young Artist

This is a picture of Andy, Joe's dad. Notice the mustache, large eyes and big smile. Pretty accurate.

The most memorable day as a mom for me thus far, was the moment when I was able to open up a fresh box of crayons with Joe and see which color crayon he favored and what his first scribbles would look like. I have no idea why this was such a big deal to me, but it was because I cried. Flash forward to today and I'm swimming in doodles. Some are keepers. Some are not. Does it make me a jerk because I don't save everything?

I heard on the news that an original Andy Warhol was found at a garage sale. It was done when he was 9 years old and it's worth well over a million dollars. If Joe is the next Andy Warhol, then I'm screwed.

Moms, how do you determine what to keep and what to trash?

Kid Shows That Make Me Want to PUNCH Someone

I've started outlawing certain shows in my house. I've done this purely for my own sanity. Some shows just grate on my nerves so bad, that no 20 minutes of peace while my child watches it is worth it. These shows include: Fresh Beat Band, Max and Ruby, and Dora. And, don't even get me started on Oobi. He's a HAND with eyes glued on him and he talks in baby talk. How can that show help a child, other than with fodder for his nightmares (and mine too). Oh my goodness. I was one fresh beat away from flipping out this morning. Oobi-rific.

What cartoons bug you the most?!

I'm Totally Gonna Win the Lottery

Wow. This Friday's jackpot is near a billion dollars.  Think about what you could do with that kind of money. I'd share the wealth for sure - pay off my student loans and debt, help my family with their mortgages, give some to charity, pay for my child's college education, and more. After I drop off my son at preschool today, I'm headed to the local 7-11 to get a few quick picks since I don't have any special numbers of my own. Either way it's a one in a billion chance of winning, but I'm feeling lucky!

Which leads me to the question, what would you do for your family with a billion dollars?

UPDATE: I won $10. So, lunch is on me ;)

Lone Ranger Movie - First Look at Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer!

I know, I know. I've been posting about a lot of movies lately, but seriously this is another one I'm pretty excited about. Love what I'm seeing... check out the pic.

From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski comes Disney/Bruckheimer Films' THE LONE RANGER. Tonto (Johnny Depp), a spirit warrior on a personal quest, joins forces in a fight for justice with John Reid (Armie Hammer), a lawman who has become a masked avenger.

THE LONE RANGER will be released in May 2013.

CleanWell with Thyme Oil and Other Natural Ingredients

I recently had the chance to sample some antibacterial products from CleanWell, a new company that makes products with a patented formula of natural thyme oil that kills germs yet contains no harsh chemicals.

As a mother of a toddler with very sensitive skin, this is great news. I have always avoided using harsh chemicals in my cleaning products and when using hand sanitizers, I always disliked how harsh and drying the alcohol in the products could be. CleanWell does the job, but with less chemicals and harsh additives.

And best of all, they are affordable  - disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizers, soaps and more are available in stores and on their site www.cleanwelltoday.com.

Loving the nice smell of the products thanks to the natural thyme oil. But, as the packaging says, don't let the nice smell fool you. This stuff gets rid of the germs! And, that's one thing I'm glad to get rid of in this house.

Finally - The Frankenweenie Trailer Is Released!

I'm so excited for Tim Burton's upcoming movie, "Frankenweenie," about a boy and his dog. Well a dog who died, and then was reanimated. It's Frankenstein for grade schoolers. The movie comes out just in time for Halloween 10-5-12. Check out the trailer and let me know what you think!

Keep up to date on all things Frankenweenie here.

My Pinterest Obsession

I've found a new obsession and its name is Pinterest. If you're not familiar with this site, you need to be. Think of it as a virtual bulletin board that you use to "pin" your favorite items from the web into various categories. Now, you'll never lose that one recipe you found for carmel apples, that one cute dog pic that you can't stop laughing about, that new music site that has all your old school favorites, or the how-to for your kid's next art project. Take a look at this gem I just posted to my crafts board.

How cute is this?

With that said, want to follow me on Pinterest?
